Authentic Greek Gyros Recipe
If you’ve ever wondered how gyros is made, or who invented gyros, this recipe is for you. Gyros is one of the most iconic Greek street foods, usually served in warm pita bread with vegetables and sauce. Traditionally, Greek gyros with meat such as pork or chicken is cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then shaved into thin slices.
Who Invented Gyros?
Gyros has its roots in the Middle East and Turkey, but the modern Greek version became popular in Greece in the 20th century. It is now one of the country’s most famous dishes, enjoyed around the world.
Ingredients (for 4 servings):
- 500g pork shoulder or chicken thighs (the classic Greek gyros meat)
- 2 tbsp Pelops Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- Salt & pepper
To serve:
- Warm pita breads
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced red onion
- Fries (optional, but authentic!)
- Tzatziki dip and/or Ketchup
Instructions
Marinate the Meat – Mix olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add meat and marinate for at least 2 hours (overnight if possible).
Cook the Gyros – Grill or pan-fry, with our Pelops Extra Virgin Olive oil, the marinated meat until fully cooked and golden. Slice into thin strips.
Assemble the Gyros – Place meat inside warm pita bread. Add onion, tomato, and fries if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
